I always understood that it was aircraft engines - hence the 'rotating propeller' BMW roundel.
The roundel is supposed to represent the view a pilot would get from the cockpit of a twin-bladed propellered aircraft, the white bits are the prop, the blue bits sky. Obviously not Scottish sky!
